Spring in New England

I’ve always felt spring in New England tends to come on fast and move into summer even faster. James says there is a ‘long run-up’ but I guess my blinks are longer than his.

Alliums are starting to pop green heads up, Daffodils are fully blooming, and ferns popped out over night last weekend. Currants are in full greenish dangling bloom, as are birch catkins. The cherry is just beginning to pop, after a week in bud, and the apples are blooming too. Leaves are just starting to unfurl on the Elderberry and a fuzz of green is showing around the edges of the Miscanthus stubs and on the Pennisetum bundles. Sedges look a little burnt but went all winter as a tangled greenish brown seaside-looking rack. Neighborhood Forsythia has been bilious for a week or more, and grass doesn’t look this good for the rest of the year. It is GLOWING with happy new shoot growth.
